Recycling facility commissioned at Monument Park Washington

News >>

The first phase of our recycling facility at Monument Park in Washington, Tyne & Wear is being commissioned. The first stage is an industrial and commercial MRF, stage 2 will be a  mixed household recyclate MRF and stage 3 is a 12-tower Parc facility for this site.

We are looking to recruit over 20 new members of staff from the local area to work at the commercial waste recycling and recovery facility at Monument Park in Washington.

The final piece of machinery was delivered and installed before Christmas completing stage one of this three stage development and Premier’s multi-million pound investment at the site in Washington.

The facility will take waste commercial waste (that’s waste from offices, factories, warehouses, etc) and be able to extract cardboard, paper, plastics, wood and metal and make it ready for recycling. It enables us to process and pre-treat waste for its commercial customers in the region, in accordance with the EU pre-treatment directive which was introduced in October last year.

We are now starting a recruitment drive to fill more than 20 positions, ranging from supervisors, weigh bridge operators, machine drivers and manual recycling staff.

The roles are to operate on a shift basis and Premier are keen to promote flexibility and offer shorter shifts to suit employees. Initially the centre will operate only during the day but will gradually increase capacity to 24 hours a day, as a result shift work will increase and recruitment could increase to as many as 40 roles.

Malcolm Johnson Treatment Director at Premier Waste Management commented “Monument Park represents an opportunity for Premier to maximise recycling in our region. The site has been developed to provide a solution to waste and help our customers meet the EU laws and targets.

“Initial testing of the machinery has indicated that as much as 50% of all waste delivered to the facility will be diverted from landfill and recycled. The facility will handle 50,000 tonnes of commercial waste rising to 100,000 tonnes at full operation.

“We are now looking to recruit from the local area to fill the positions we have at the site. We have carefully designed the site to offer the best possible working conditions for all employees including air conditioned buildings and positive pressure atmospheres to create a dust suppression system.”
